Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) was incorporated by Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) with the purpose of constructing a 1980 MW thermal power plant at Village Banawala in Punjab. It is worth mentioning that TSPL is one of the first few Supercritical plants being constructed.
This largest and green power plant in the state being developed by Sterlite Energy Ltd, Vedanta Group Company at an approximate cost of Rs 11000 crore. This is the first environment-friendly and energy efficient power plant in the country. This hi-tech and nonpolluting plant has been evaded and commissioned by SAD-BJP government.
It proposed Talwandi Sabo power project in Punjab upwards by over Rs 3,000 crore, taking the total investment commitment to around Rs 13,000 crore. The Talwandi Sabo project has got coal linkages from Coal India’s subsidiaries — Mahanadi Coal Limited and the South Eastern Coal Limited coal fields
Diversified metal multinational Vedanta Group, as part of its multi-billion dollar plans in the power space, got the rights to develop a 1,980 (3×660) MW commercial project at an estimated investment of Rs 10,000 crore. Punjab government also got clearance of additional units which enhanced the total generation capacity of the project to 2,640 MW through an additional expenditure of over Rs 3,000 crore.
The company has also secured coal linkages for about 6.09 million tonnes per annum through the auction of coal linkages for captive power plants. The tenure of the linkage is five years which can further be extended. The premium paid is Rs 96 per tonne , which is 10% over Coal India linkage price of captive power plants.
Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal inaugurated State’s largest power generation facility, the Talwandi Sabo Plant Limited set by Vedanta group which provide electricity to 20 lakh households as it generates 1980 MW of electricity. It is a major step taken by the state government in making Punjab power surplus. This came up with providing facilities to the people who have been facing darkness and power cuts for longer hours.
It has given a boost to the economy and industrial sector of Punjab. 100% power generated will be supplied to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) from this project for 25 years.
The first unit helped in meeting the anticipated demands of 10000 MW per day during June and July where 1980 MW Talwandi Sabo Plant Ltd (TSPL) added 660 MW to the national grid.
TSPL has also added more than 12 million units of power and will be providing cheapest power to the state for years to come. It is a major milestone in power generation in the state.
