The state has witnessed a complete turnaround in the power situation in Punjab with the coming up of a 700-MW-capacity unit of Rajpura Thermal Plant.
The 1400(2×700 MW) MW capacity Rajpura Thermal Plant, by internationally acclaimed engineering giant Larsen & Toubro Limited at the cost of Rs 9,600 crore, was opened by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. This green field project’s foundation was laid on March 3,2010. It was a great achievement for the people of Punjab as the first unit of Rajpura thermal plant with the capacity of 700 MW started its commercial operation.
It was inaugurated by Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal for setting up the coal-fired power plant. This is the first major power plant to be owned and operated by L&T through Nabha Power Limited. South Eastern Coalfields has the fuel supply agreement for coal supply for Rajpura Power Plant. The plant requires 6.75 million tones (MT) of coal per annum for the plant when it is of good quality otherwise, it could be 7MT.
The sponsor of the plant is the Punjab State Power Corporation, which has established Nabha Power as a special purpose vehicle for the project. Nabha Power was transferred to L&T Power Development, a wholly-owned subsidiary of engineering and construction firm L&T.
L&T amidst a lot of fanfare and enthusiasm and declaring” Punjab as the only power surplus state ”This gigantic project has ushered the new era of development and prosperity in the state through achieving self-sufficiency in power. Punjab has brought a new milestone in the field of power by bringing this thermal project. SAD-BJP alliance has come up by fulfilling its major promise to make Punjab self-reliant in power sector.
Nabha Power Limited, the company that is constructing the thermal plant, employed around 100 villagers, including unskilled laborers. They recruited more people from the villages from whom the government acquired land for construction of the thermal plant. Their demands were also sorted out.
Rajpura Thermal Plant has changed the power scenario in the region with the state certainly having an advantage to further offer it to industry. This thermal power plant was a gift for all the Punjabis on the 86th birth anniversary of country’s great political politician Parkash Singh Badal.
It has come up with the aim to reduce power tariff and supplying power to the people of Punjab who have been facing darkness from so many years due to long power cuts. This power plant has to the growth of other various sectors be it in agriculture, industry, domestic or service sector and now the scarcity of power will be a past story for Punjab.
L&T signed an agreement with the Punjab government for supplying power for 25 years.
